När man har tillgång till ljuvliga lockar av fårull måste man ju göra något kul med dem. Det tar emot att karda alltihop och jag letar därför ständigt efter nya idéer på vad man kan göra med råa lockar där de kan komma till sin rätt. Den här gången fick de pryda ett par handledsvärmare.
Jag började med att sy två tuber av polokragen på en gammal lammullströja som jag filtat i tvättmaskin. Sedan fäste jag de klippta ändarna av lockarna med en tovningsnål.
Efter det våttovade jag med varmt vatten och såpa. Slutligen la jag alltihop i blöt i ljummet vatten med ulltvättmedel (lockarna var ju otvättade) och sedan i kallt vatten med ättikssprit.
Kanske inte de mest praktiska handledsvärmarna, men man kanske inte alltid behöver vara så praktisk? Lite flärd och ljuva lockar kan man väl ändå kosta på sig någon gång ibland, om så bara för skojs skull. Och nog är de väl lite läckra när de sticker ut ur ärmen på jackan?!

Wrist warmers with locks
Some locks are just too gorgeous to disturb by carding and I am therefore constantly on the look out for things to do with raw locks. In this case I used them to decorate a pair of wrist warmers (cuffs). I started by sewing two tubes from the polo-neck of a pure wool sweater that I had fulled in the washing machine. I needle-felted, and then wet-felted, on the locks. Finally, I soaked everything in warm water with wool detergent (as the locks were previously unwashed) and then in cold water with vinegar.
Perhaps not the most practical wrist warmers to wear, but perhaps we don’t always have to be so practical? Now and then it might be nice to, just for fun, indulge in a bit of flair and gorgeous locks. And I do think they look nice sticking out of a jacket sleeve.

The wrist warmers with wool locks are fantastic and I do love the repurposing of materials to make new wonderful accessories. But I have a question about the felting process. Since the knitted wrist material is already felted in washing machine, how are you able to felt the locks to that material? I understand that you needle-felt them in place but still wonder how the felting happens? Thank you for sharing your lovely work!
Thanks for your encouraging comment and good question! I don’t think the knitted material really felts much more, but the ends of the locks migrate through it and felt into it. They really do merge with the knitted material during wet-felting. The needle-felting is just to keep them in place and start the migrating process. In the bottom left photo of the wet-felting process you can see how the white wool has started poking through the knitted material. I suppose it is pretty much the same as when you nuno-felt wool on other fabric, such as silk or cotton. The silk/cotton doesn’t felt itself, but the wool felts into the fabric and pulls together during felting. I hope that made sense?
