Vi hade kvar en del glasmosaik från när vi gjorde älvträdgården. Många av dessa mosaikbitar var transparenta och jag tänkte att de skulle kunna komma till sin rätt limmade på glas. Jag tog fram två gamla tavelramar med glasskivor och barnen fick börja med att måla ramarna neutralt vita.  Sedan plockade jag fram mosaiken samt dekorstenar, glaspärlor, ståltråd och lim och gav barnen fria händer. Jag funderade på om vi borde använda riktigt glaslim, men det kräver UV-ljus för att härda och just den här dagen var det brist på det när regnet vräkte ner. Med facit i hand kan jag meddela att limmet jag valde (Clear – multi glue gel) fungerade utmärkt till det här och var enkelt för barnen att använda. Både mosaiken och limmet kommer från Creativ Companys hobbybutik.

Min 6-åring gillar symmetri. Jag fick hjälpa henne att böja till ett hjärta och två snirklar, av ståltråd som hon trätt med pärlor, och limma fast det i mitten. Resten satt hon och limmade noggrant fast själv, efter linjer som hon ritat på ett papper och lagt under glasskivan.

Min 10-åring ville ha kontraster i färg. Det skulle se ut som slumpmässigt kaos, men när man tittade närmare skulle det finnas ett mönster. Band av olika färger med ett hjärta som gick att urskilja för att det hade avvikande färger. Och snirklar på den andra halvan i samma färger. Det var riktigt roligt att höra hon tänkte medan hon planerade och jobbade med sin mosaik.

Det blev riktigt läckra konstverk, särskilt när solen lyser igenom dem. Nu står de i köksfönstret och även en mulen dag blir man glad av att se dem.

Glass mosaic

We had quite a few pieces of glass mosaic left over from when we made our fairy garden. Many of these pieces were translucent and I figured they may look nice glued to glass. I picked out two old picture frames with glass panels, and the kids started by painting the frames a neutral white. Then I got out the mosaic, glass stones, glass beads, wire and glue, and gave the children free hands. I considered using proper glass-glue, but that requires UV-light to harden, and on this particular day there was a lack of that as the rain poured down. With hindsight, I can say that the craft-glue I chose (Clear – Multi Glue Gel) worked well for this and was easy for the kids to use. Both the mosaic and the glue comes from Creativ Company.

My 6-year-old is fascinated by symmetry. I helped her bend a piece of wire, which she had threaded with beads, into a heart. All the rest is her own doing, patiently gluing all the beads in place, following lines she drew on paper and put under the glass. My 10-year-old wanted colour contrasts, randomness and chaos. But when you looked closer, there would be a pattern. Bands of different colours with a heart that could be detected through deviating colours. And twirls on the other half, picking up the same colours. It was really interesting to hear her thoughts as she planned and worked with her mosaic.

I think they are lovely works of art, especially when the sun shines through them. They now stand in our kitchen window, and even on a cloudy day I feel happy just looking at them.
