A NUNO-FELTED VEST WITH PRE-FELT AND SILK (English translation in italics in the text below)

Vi har inte haft så många riktigt varma och soliga dagar i Jämtland, men en dag var både varm och nästan vindstilla. Då gäller det att passa på! Jag behövde en stor arbetsyta (större än köksbordet) för att kunna lägga ut nålfilten av merino och silke som jag köpt från Skovmose by hand. Med flera bord, bordskivor, brädor, två bockar och en stor vaxduk lyckades jag bygga ihop en funktionell yta som kändes mycket mer inbjudande än köksgolvet. Nålfilten var ursprungligen 120 cm x 100 cm, men jag kunde töja ut den på längden till ca. 110 cm x 180 cm.

We have not had all that many warm summer days here, but one day was actually both warm and almost without wind. So, I quickly decided to make the most of it. I needed a large working space (larger than my kitchen table) to make something with the merino-silk prefelt i bought from Skovmose by hand. Using several tables, loose tabletops, wooden boards, two trestles, and a large plastic tablecloth, I managed to build a functional surface that felt much more inviting than my kitchen floor. The prefelt was 120 cm x 100 cm, but I managed to stretch it lengthwise to about 110 cm x 180 cm.

Äldsta dottern hjälpte mig att fukta ullen och jag la på former klippta av ett tjockt bomullstyg. Sedan fick båda barnen och min mor hjälpa till att lägga på sidentyget – i lätt bris är det en fördel att ha en person i varje hörn av tyget…

My eldest daughter helped me moisten the wool, and I placed out shapes cut from a thick cotton fabric. Then both my daughters and my mother had to help me lay out the silk fabric – in a light breeze there is an advantage of having a person in each corner of the fabric…

Därefter vidtog sedvanlig tovning – och när det handlar om att leka med vatten och såpbubblor, knåda och kasta så hjälper gärna yngsta dottern till.

After that came the usual felting – and when it comes to playing with bubbles, kneading and throwing, my youngest is eager to help out.

När vi med  gemensamma krafter lyckats krympa ner det till ca. 90 cm x 150 cm tog jag fram provdockan och klippte till två ärmhål och fortsatte forma tyget på provdockan.

When we had managed to shrink it down to about 90 cm x 150 cm, I took out my mannequin, cut out two armholes and continued to shape the fabric on the doll.

Det blev en väst av enklare modell (i princip en rektangel med två hål för armarna), men jag är oerhört nöjd med strukturen i det fasttovade siden tyget och effekten av bitarna av bomullstyget mellan ullen och sidentyget. Insidan av västen är också otroligt mjuk och vacker med sitt inslag av silke. 

It turned into a simple vest (strictly speaking, just a rectangle with two armholes), but I am really pleaed with how the silk fabric scrunched up from being felted into the wool, and the effects of the pieces of cotton fabric between the wool and the silk fabric. The inside of the vest is also increadibly soft, and pretty with its silk fibre elements.

Och om jag inte använder den som väst så vill min yngsta ha den som klänning. 😉

And if I don´t use the vest myself, my youngest wants to use it as a dress. 😉
