Stickning är inte riktigt min grej. Jag är alldeles för långsam och har inte riktigt tålamod att sticka en rad i taget, med vetskap om hur många rader det är kvar. Men med ett tillräckligt tjockt garn, och utan stickor, kan man sticka en pläd på en kväll.

Den första pläden gjorde vi av 2 kg Shetlandsull från World of Wool. Ullen säljs under benämningen ”jumbo yarn”, vilket är detsamma som deras tops (kammad ull) och säljs i en kontinuerlig längd. ”Garnet” är alltså inte spunnet på något sätt. För att säkra fibrerna lite mer rullade jag ullen mot en handduk i knäet. Då får man en lätt tovad yta och ett något tåligare ”garn” att arbeta med.

I am really not a knitter. I am too slow and I lack the patience to knit one row at a time, knowing how many rows are left to go. But, with a sufficiently thick yarn, and without knitting-needles, it is possible to knit a blanket in one evening.

We knitted the first blanket out of 2 kg Shetland wool from World of Wool. The wool is sold under the name ”jumbo yarn”, which is the same as their tops (combed wool) and sold in a continuous length. The ”yarn” is in other words not spun in any way. To secure the fibers a little more, I rolled the wool against a towel on my lap. That gives you a lightly felted surface and a slightly more durable ”yarn” to work with.

Själva ”stickningen” gjorde vi med bara händerna på ett stort bord. Första raden är i princip en löpögla och virkade luftmaskor. Sedan drog vi ullen genom öglorna som när man stickar, men lät öglorna ligga på bordet istället för att trä upp dem på stickor. Yngsta dotterns lilla hand och arm var precis rätt storlek för öglorna och vi turades om och stickade varannan rad.

We did the ”knitting” with just our hands, on a large table. The first row is basically a slip knot and crochet chain stitches. Then we pulled the wool through the loops like you would when knitting, but just let the loops lie on the table instead of on knitting needles. My youngest daughter’s small hand and arm were just the right size for the loops, and we took turns knitting every other row.

Den här pläden har blivit en favorit i fåtöljen framför TVn. / This blanket has become a favorite in the armchair in front of the TV.

Nästa pläd gjorde vi av 2 kg vit Blue faced Leicester ull, även det från World of Wool. / We made the next blanket out of 2 kg of natural white Blue faced Leicester wool, also from World of Wool.

När pläden var färdigstickad sprayade jag ytan med vatten och körde den ett tag i torktumlaren för att tova den lite. Det är lite läskigt, men resultatet blir bra och pläden mycket mer hållbar.

When the blanket was knitted, I sprayed the surface with water and ran it a short while in the dryer to felt it a bit. It´s a little scary, but the result is good and the blanket much more durable.

Slutstorleken (efter lätt tovning) blev 120cm x 80cm och den här pläden blev en uppskattad julklapp till min mor. / The final size (after light felting) was 120cm x 80cm and this blanket was an appreciated Christmas gift for my mother.
