Ho, ho, ho! Nu är det inte långt kvar till jul och om man råkar ha en hög med långa, glansiga, vita lockar (i det här fallet från Klövsjöfår), så är det inte alltför långsökt att fundera på om man kanske skulle tova sig ett tomteskägg. Ett lösskägg med riktiga lockar måste ju se lite mer äkta ut än det syntet eländet vi annars plockat fram varje år…

Jag började med att klippa ut en grundform i ett glesvävt bomullstyg. På det la jag ut två tunna lager kardad ull, fäste dem lite löst med en tovningsnål, och klippte en öppning för munnen. Sedan nåltovade jag fast lockarna i rader, med början längs nederkanten och mustaschen sist.

För att fästa lockarna ordentligt, och tova in ullen i tyget på baksidan, våttovade jag också alltihop. Först rad för rad i basen på lockarna, och sedan från baksidan (dvs tygsidan). Här gäller det att tova lagom mycket – tillräckligt för att fästa lockarna, men inte för mycket så att hela locklängden tovas fast. Man får ha lite fingertoppskänsla och is i magen. Men det gick över förväntan.

När skägget torkat, vek jag ner den övre kanten över ett resårband och sydde fast. Jag är riktigt nöjd med resultatet och sambon blev en stilig tomte med skägget på. Han kan nog bli en bra reserv, ifall den riktiga tomten inte hittar hit. 😉

Santa’s beard felted with locks

Ho, ho, ho! Now, it’s soon Christmas and, if you happen to have a pile of long, shiny, white locks, it’s not all that farfetched to think about if they could be felted into a white beard. A beard with real locks must look a little more genuine, than the synthetic version we usually dig out each year… 

I started by cutting out a basic form, from a loosely woven cotton fabric. On that, I laid out two thin layers of carded wool, fixed them loosely with a felting-needle, and cut an opening for the mouth. After that, I needle-felted on the locks in rows, starting along the bottom edge and doing the mustache last. To secure the locks properly, and felt the wool into the fabric on the back, I also wet-felted everything. First row by row, at the base of the locks, and then from the back (ie the fabric side). You need to felt it well enough to secure the locks, but not too much so that the entire length of the locks get felted. It´s a tricky balance, but it turned out well.

When the beard had dried, I folded down the top edge, over an elastic band, and sewed it down. I’m really happy with the result, and my partner looked quite good in the beard. He could probably be a good stand-in, in case the real Santa can´t find his way… 😉 In Sweden, the main Christmas celebrations are on Christmas Eve, and most kids expect Santa to come knocking on the door in the afternoon or evening. In other words, we don´t just let him sneak down the chimeny at night, they expect to actually meet Santa. Hence, the need for a decent face-covering beard.
