Snart är det Halloween, och det tyckte vi var en bra ursäkt för att tillverka några spöken förra helgen. Vi började med att göra en större variant, där vi använde överblivna bitar av hönsnät och ståltråd för att göra en överkropp med armar och huvud. För att få till ungefär rätt proportioner fick 6-åringen stå som modell.

Sedan svepte vi lakan på figuren, fastsydda med några stygn här och där, och hände upp henne i ett träd (ja, då menar jag spöket, inte lillasyster…).

Den svävande vålnaden, med tyg som fladdrar i vinden, ser faktiskt riktigt kuslig ut i skymningen… En lykta i handen, eller lite belysning underifrån skulle inte sitta fel.

Vi gjorde även mindre spöken av tyg och Paverpol (ett skulpturlim som finns hos Creativ Company). Som stomme använde vi små plastflaskor, med frigolitägg på toppen som huvuden, och fasttejpade armar av rostfri metalltråd med småfrigolitbitar i ändarna. Sedan var det bara att kleta ner tygbitar med Paverpol (just här skiljer sig tekniken åt något mellan min försiktiga 10-åring och min kladdälskande 6-åring…) och drapera dem över stommarna. När limmet torkat (nästa dag) gick det att dra ut flaskan och metalltråden, och kvar blir ett spöke av stelt tyg på ett frigolitägg.

Det här var så roligt, så dagen efter bjöd vi hit två av barnens kompisar för att göra fler spöken. Och nu hänger och står det små spöken lite varstans. Om man vill kan man även rita ansikten på dem (har 6-åringen påpekat flera gånger), men jag tycker de är fina som de är.

Och när vi ändå var igång på temat ”gamla lakan”, så blev det så klart även några mumier. Här använde vi piprensare som stomme, lite bomull som utfyllnad till huvudet och bålen, och sedan remsor av lakan virat runt alltihop. Två svarta nålar fungerar som ögon, om man vill ha det.

Min yngsta bestämde sig för att göra en stor mumie-/skeletthand istället, och både mumierna och handen går att böja till i olika poser. Det kan nog bli en lite kul detalj i borddukningen på Halloween, med mumier och händer som kravlar runt bland glas och annat.

Alla är inte så förtjusta i Halloween traditionerna som gjort intåg i Sverige under de senaste åren, men jag ser det som en bra ursäkt för att pyssla lite med barnen. Och kanske mår vi bra av att pigga upp oss med lite småroliga kusligheter när höstmörkret känns tungt.  Med det önskar jag er alla en Happy Halloween! 🙂

Ghosts and mummies from old sheets

It’s soon Halloween, which the kids and I thought was a good excuse to make some ghosts last weekend. We started by making a larger version, where we used leftover pieces of chicken mesh and wire to make a torso with arms and head. To get the right proportions, we used the 6-year-old as a model. We draped the figure in old sheets, sewed a few stitches here and there, and hung her in a tree (and by “her” I mean the ghost, not the little sister…). The floating ghost, with fabric swaying in the breeze, actually looks quite eerie at dusk. A lantern in her hand, or some illumination from below, would be really nice.

We also made smaller ghosts with fabric and Paverpol (a fabric stiffener available at Creativ Company). As a body, we used small plastic bottles, with Styrofoam eggs on top as heads, and arms of stainless steel wire with Styrofoam bits on the ends. Then all we had to do was smear the pieces of fabric with Paverpol (here the technique differ somewhat between my careful 10-year-old and my gooey-loving 6 year old…), and drape them over the figures. When the Paverpol had dried (the next day), we could pull out the bottle and wire, and were left with a ghost of hardened fabric. This was so much fun, that the day after, we invited two of the children’s friends over to make more ghosts. Now we have the little ghosts hanging and standing all over the place. If you want to, you can also draw faces on them (the 6-year-old pointed out several times), but I think they are nice as they are.

And while we were on the theme ”old sheets”, we obviously also had to make some mummies. Here we used a pipe cleaner as a core, a little cotton padding for the head and torso, and then strips of old sheets wrapped around everything. Two black pins work as the eyes. My youngest decided to make a skeleton hand instead, and both mummies and the hand can be bent to different positions. This should make a fun addition to the table setting on Halloween, with mummies and hands crawling around the glasses.

There are many that aren´t too thrilled about Halloween traditions, that have made their way into Sweden during the past few years, but I see it as a good excuse to do some crafts with the kids. And maybe a little spooky, but fun, stuff can do us good, when the autumn darkness has set in. With that, I wish you all a Happy Halloween! 🙂
